About Me

I am Alexander Jung, tenured Associate Professor of Machine Learning at Aalto University, Finland, where I lead the Machine Learning for Big Data group at the Department of Computer Science. With nearly two decades of experience in research and education, I care about advancing machine learning, and just as much about teaching it clearly to students, researchers, and professionals.

Background

I earned my Dipl.-Ing. (MSc, 2008) and Dr.techn. (PhD, 2012) degrees in electrical engineering and signal processing from TU Wien (Vienna University of Technology). My doctorate was awarded sub auspiciis Praesidentis rei publicae, Austria’s highest distinction for a doctorate, conferred by the Federal President in person. It requires top grades in every examination from upper secondary school through the doctoral defense. Fewer than 1% of Austrian doctoral graduates earn it, around 20 out of some 2,500 per year.

My research focuses on federated learning, trustworthy AI, and machine learning for large-scale applications. See the Research page for current projects and publications, and the Books page for my textbooks.
